|The Lego Serious Play Retrospective

New Retrospective - The Lego Retro


Here it is folks, it's been a long time coming and I don't care to admit how long this one took me to build.. In probably my most playful virtual retro yet, the the LEGO Group Retro.


This one probably isn't for brand new teams given the abstract nature of it. There is clear guidance in the template for how to move the Lego pieces and build your models. Each team has it's own 'Toybox' space to create their models before sharing back with the team.

I'm afraid that due to how time consuming this one is to build, with so many moving images, I've only been able to create it in Miro and it isn't easily portable into other mediums.




Why use this retro?


This retro engages our playful sides. It uses virtual Lego pieces to represent how individuals in a team feel things are going, before encouraging the team to identify to build the teams future together.

How it works?


𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗰𝗲: Practice your virtual Lego building skills by building as many Lego ducks as possible in 2 minutes. Tips are provided on how to combine pieces, don't forget to use the PgUp / Bring to front functionality!


Legospection


Invite the team to build a Lego model representing how the last iteration went from their perspective. They'll have 5 minutes to create their models before sharing back with the group. Invite them to spend 30 seconds explaining the what and why of their model. In the image above I've built a model to represent someone 'Firefighting'.


Legomentation


Next, invite the team to build a model representing how their next iteration could look with improvements. Again, each person will spend 30 seconds explaining the what, and the why.


Legoactions


Most important of all, the 'So what now?'


With models past and future imagined, it's time for some Legoactions. Encourage the team to identify 3-5 experiments that they can use as building blocks to improvement as a team. Without actions, a retrospective doesn't add much value. Don't forget to pull these onto the backlog for transparency & visibility.


Rate the retro: Inspect & Adapt the retro itself by rating how much value it brought you & the team using the fist of five scale. Retros themselves should also be subject to continuous improvement. Thanks to Said Saddouk for his Lego Man artwork featured in this section!
